That's a really cool looking shell. Why did I think they'd all look like big bottle rockets?

The force of that thing being pushed up can be felt a hundred feet from it. I was only 30 feet from it when it was shot off, it's a good thing I was squating or it would have knocked me over.

They come in different shapes and sizes depending on the maker. Most of the ones I shoot come in this shape or cylindrical.

Twelve inches??? ~ wow ~ not exactly what I expected,
but 'nuf said!
And it could have 'knocked you over' if you had been standing ~ duck ~ NOW!
Glad to hear you had a great weekend, except for fog!
I understand that in some areas of California they banned fireworks due to the dry conditions, fires, etc. They must be north of you, eh?

1200 fires! I'm surrounded, most are in the national forests caused by lightning strikes.

My nephew is in SF/Berkley and he says there is sediment from the fires on 'everything' ~ sounds terrible.
The dry ground/grass and the lightning starting fires ~ how frightening!
Makes you wonder why the rain doesn't put the fires out ~ but then it is way out of my expertise and so I just shudder to think of it. I'm so afraid of fire!!!

I saw in the paper where a firework misfired, and went into a crowd injuring 37 people, and I believe killing several!! Guess they can be dangerous!!

Yes they can. A lot of things have to fail before something bad happens like what you just said. It sucks when people get hurt especially if the pyro crew didn't do what they were supposed to do. Safety, safety, safety.

I just called my children in to see that. We did not know that they looked like that. So they get flung/shot up in the air by some force and explode and we see the fireworks? Don't they do it electronically now rather than some guy running to fuse each one?
We went to our regular show but it was not like previous years (30-40 minutes) so we were a bit disappointed (15 minutes give or take). However, in light of the economy, we can understand why it was "short fused", pardon the pun, I am on a hot streak. People were still waiting for the end of the show since the end shot was not long and it was very low in the sky.

Most shows are done either by hand fire or done electrically. Very few are done with computer chips embedded into the shell (Disneyland).
The shape of the fireworks depend on the maker. The fireworks (Shells) are lowered into the mortar tubes and then fired. The shells have three different firing systems. One to lift it up and out of the tube, the second and third is for multi-colored or shaped effects.
